Question

Do I need a separate bank account for rental income?

Answered

Not legally, if you own in your own name. If you own through a company, the company’s money has to be kept separate from yours.

Even where it is optional, a separate account makes the year end faster and the figures harder to get wrong. Mixing rent with household spending means reconstructing a year of statements every January.

It also makes deposits cleaner. If you hold a deposit under an insured scheme, being able to show where the money sat is worth having.

A basic business or second personal account is usually enough. It does not need to be anything sophisticated.
