Question

What is a Right to Rent check?

Answered

A check that everyone aged 18 or over who will live in the property as their main home has the right to be in the UK. It applies in England only.

You do it before the tenancy starts, by seeing original documents with the person present, or by video call with the originals in view, or through the Home Office online service where the tenant gives you a share code.

Keep a dated copy for the length of the tenancy and for a year afterwards. Getting it wrong carries a civil penalty, and the check has to be on every adult occupier, not just the person whose name is on the agreement.
