You are in breach of the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations from the day it expires, and the risk is criminal rather than civil.
The Health and Safety Executive enforces it. Penalties run to fines and, in the worst cases, imprisonment. Your insurer may also decline a claim if the record was out of date at the time of an incident.
Get it done as soon as you notice. There is no grace period, and no version of this where waiting improves the outcome.
